PROGETTO "W S.AGATA CATANIA IN POP ART"
The project “Viva Sant'Agata – Catania in Pop Art” was born in 2016, as a tribute to my city, Catania,
and to its patron saint, Saint Agatha.
In the artworks, through my journey through time, I tell the story of Catania from the 50s to the 70s
where the characters depicted are those from the MARVEL comics of the time, which are "relocated" to the same period but in a city in the midst of the patronal celebrations in honor of Sant'Agata, while Pasolini, Mastroianni, Sordi and Gina Lollobrigida transform the streets of the Etna capital into an open-air film set.
This is how in the artworks we encounter Alberto Sordi while filming “The Art of Making Do”, or Marcello Mastroianni grappling with “Il bell'Antonio” or even Gina Lollobrigida busy with “A Beautiful November”.
In this project's works, I recount the Catania of Vitaliano Brancati, the birth of the department stores on Via Etnea, and the folklore of the Candelore accompanied by music and the fish market.
"Viva Sant'Agata" is an artwork from the project, measuring 6 meters long and 1 meter high. I depicted the procession of the relics of Saint Agatha, placed on a fercolo pulled by the faithful on two long ropes. Among the faithful, you can glimpse the faces of illustrious Sicilians such as Leonardo Sciascia and Andrea Camilleri.
I couldn't resist the desire to give a more "Pop" touch by applying some artworks
Roy Lichtenstein's Ben-Day dots.
With “W Sant'Agata – Catania in Pop Art” permanent exhibitions have been created in institutional venues such as
Catania's "Palazzo della Cultura," solo exhibitions at institutional venues such as the "Palazzo della Cultura"
and the “Galleria d'Arte Moderna” in Catania, in prestigious locations such as the “Rinascente” store in Catania
and in international events such as the Sicily Fest in London.
The project's artworks become the official images used in the celebrations in honor of Saint Agatha
and through the live television broadcasts I participated in, I told this project to all that audience
who followed the stages of the procession of this celebration from all over the world
which is the third largest and most Christian in the world.
“W Sant'Agata – Catania in Pop Art” is a project that is always alive, because it is here that I can transmit
all the love for my city, for its patron saint, and for the Marvel comics of my childhood.
